Northland Muskie adventures offer a great muskie guide service that covers waters in northeastern Minnesota – as well as some in northwestern Wisconsin. These guys concentrate mainly on trophy-potential waters – and getting folks on big fish. Of course it’s muskie fishing, which means no guarantees, but by working together and sharing information on the different waters – fishing every day – the guys are able to stay on top of patterns and optimize the potential for getting a shot a trophy fish, by knowing which waters are the hottest and where the majority of the fish are located. Important too, besides being great anglers, they’re nice guys; helpful in teaching folks to be more effective in catching fish, handling and releasing – and having fun.
    PATTERN:
It was mid-summer in the warm water period, though this particular season – it seemed as though Ma Nature hadn’t gotten the memo. Water temps were more spring-like, yet weed growth was up well – and with some fairly steady weather – there were quite a few fish in the shallower areas holding in weeds and rocks. This time of year, it’s often just a matter of covering lots of water and putting in lots of time, trying to see what the fish are in the mood for – on any given day.
And, it really does help when folks are on the water daily – keeping track of fish location. And (effective anglers always do this), checking out several new areas every day – to see if fish are there. This was one of those trips, thankfully, where things went pretty right overall. (My buddy Murphy, who generally loves to arrive with cameras around, must have forgotten about me.) The weather wasn’t abnormally hot or cooler than it had been, and we just concentrated on some of the areas Pete and Dustin knew fish had been on. We all used different types of baits and took maximum advantage of feeding windows, while also plucking a fish or two during fairly slow periods.
It was interesting to note that we had windows where big in-line spinners were getting attacked during high activity periods; and yet there were times where I had more action in the back of the boat with more finesse baits like swimbaits (lots of interest in Sebile’s Magic Swimmer), jerks and soft plastics. We had a great time and got a great show.
