FISHING REPORT – Oct. 22, 2009

Hi Folks

Well we’re paying for the nice weather in September. The month of October has brought us some very cold, wet and windy weather. Fishing has responded fairly well. There’s a strong walleye bite going and this fishing should just keep getting better now that turnover is completed on most area lakes. Jig-and-minnow combinations have worked the best as of late. I’ve been concentrating in water depths ranging from 20 to 35 feet on hard bottom. The Willow Flowage has also been producing some good action in shallow water – although that’s all they have out there at the moment. Jigs-tipped with redtails on the walleyes, fished in heavy timber at around the 5 to 7 ft. mark seems to be about the best. CRAPPIES have also been producing some pretty good action out here. Indian Bay is the place to look and slip bobbers tipped with minnows are the bait of choice. Be careful when heading out to any of the flowages with the shallow water they can be extremely hazardous to navigate.

MUSKY fishing has really struggled so far this month. It has definitely not been up to par with what we’ve come to expect for the month of October. Fish are still hitting a variety of lures – suicks, large cranks, crane baits and large rubber have all been showing some effectiveness. At the very least they seem to lure some fish in to the boat. Where if you have a sucker hanging, they will tend to grab that. Sucker activity is where the disappointment lies. While fish are still picking up suckers, they just don’t seem to be quite as aggressive as normal. Again, with turnover completing I’m looking for this action to pick up hot and heavy this next week. When heading out after these critters, concentrate on weed lines, anywhere from shallow to deep water. Also rocky points and humps tend to be holding some fish.

That’s it for now. See you on the water. Jeff
