    Default Burbot

Anyone ever caught a Burbot on the Rock

Caught one off my dock in snug harbor, 24" guss 8/10 lbs

Good fighting fish but I didn't nnow what it was.

Someone told it was dog fish, did some research and found out it is a game fish and is a member of the Cod family with a good tasting white meat. take a look @ http://www.fishalaskamagazine.com/ar.../burbot302.htm

Many years ago I caught something similar up at the Trestle. At the time, I called it a dogfish, but it could have been a bowfin or your burbot. I don't remember it well enough to say it was one or the other.
My job used to get in the way of my personal life, but not anymore.

I am not sure if the water in "The Rock" is clear and cold enough to sustain a burbot population. Burbot and Dogfish look quite a bit similar in many ways. I will check with the fish biologist for our area.

    Keep a tight line!!!

Here is the reply from Justine Haaz from the WDNR.

There are burbot in both Petenwell and Castle Rock Lakes. Last week we were stream shocking Lyndon Creek a tributary to the Wisconsin River and also caught a burbot. People can often get burbot and bowfin (dogfish) confused as they are very similar in appearance. However the burbot does not have the sharp teeth or the black "eye spot" towards the tail that are present on the bowfin.
