Can anyone tell me what species of fish this is? Some type of trout?
It was found (and released after the picture was taken) in a stream/creek south of Madison.

Was out on Mendota tonight and saw (literally) hundreds of fish on the finder around the Warner launch / Maple Bluff area, in the weeds around 8-10 feet. Not sure what they were, as they didn't want...

Last spring, there were A LOT of people catching crappies off/around the bridge by the Nau-Ti-Gal. They were using minnows and hooks. From what I remember, they weren't using bobbers. ...
