Lake Erie Western Basin

Fishing has been a mixed bag in April. Weather and high winds have had us cancel several Charters. This past weekend April 16,17,18 were as good as walleye fishing gets in the western basin. We were blessed with a high pressure front that moved in along with light winds and warmer temps that turned the walleye on. The bite was from the west side of Crane Creek to the east side of Camp Perry in 11 to 14 ft of water using purple or blue hair jigs tipped with a fat head minnow. Most all fish were from 18 to 23 in. with a few in the 24 to 27 in range. All fish we caught were jacks that were still full of sperm. We limited out all three days and believe me everyone was happy with the 4 fish limit per person.
On another note that same week the Wal-Mart FLW Pro Walleye Tour was the same dates and with a field of 124 boats the winner was Pat Byle from Colgate,Wi with a three day total weight of 92 lbs. 9 oz. Byle's amateur Kenny Henexson of Thornton, Colo catch for the event was 94 lbs. 3 oz. to give him the co-angler winner. Opening day Wednesday was canceled due to high winds. In his winning words Byle said that Lake Erie is " an unbelievable fishery." Henexson says that he is counting the days until he retires from his day job, so he can move here because he says this " really is the walleye capital of the world."
