Checking nets with the DNR
Today I volunteered some time to help our local DNR. Justine, Jake and I set out to check some nets. These nets were set in different locations throughout the body of water. All nets produced fish. These fish were then transferred to a holding tank and after all nets were emptied we then recorded data from each fish.
For the walleyes the tail fin is trimmed (this identifies the fish has been recorded if recaptured) and a vain is removed from the dorsal fin. This is how they age each fish. Also, each walleye is check to see if it’s spent, meaning has the walleye laid its eggs. Each fish is weighted and measured then released.
