Walleyes on the reefs already?
A couple of guests spotted more than a few boats fishing walleyes on the rocks yesterday. Are the walleyes concentrating out in the mid-lake stuff already?
It would be much earlier than "normal", especially with the late spring, but there was some reef action last year in the middle of June as well.
Still keep in mind that even on the reefs the last couple of years, the fish have been on the deeper parts of the reefs. There hasn't been a lot of fish caught on the shallowest part of the rocks. Work the reefs out towards the slopes and breaks and you may have a better bite. This is relative to whatever the reef tops out at. The deeper part of a 6 foot reef may be 10-14 feet, but a 15 foot reef may be 20-25 feet on the break or slope.
As well, for many anglers, careful boat control has been a key to successful reef fishing, especially the last few seasons. When they are working a slope or break, being off course even slightly can put you out of the sweet spot.
Once you get on the fish, keep working the same area and you should have more success. This is where electronics will really pay off. Good, reliable electronics are almost a must have tool on Lake of the Woods.
Good fishing, everyone.
