The first five weeks of the 2009 Fishing Season are in the books.

Strong winds from all directions and some overnight lows in the 30's dealt anglers a tough hand from May 9th to June 12th. Yet our guests have prevailed and landed some really nice Crappies and Walleyes. (To view pictures...please click on the "Photo Gallery" tab....then click on "2009 Wall of Fame". Be sure to view all the different pages of pictures.)

Surface water temps rose from 40 degrees to 50 degrees quickly this spring. But the climb from 50 to 60 degrees has been slowed and stalled by the inconsistent weather conditions.

Walleye anglers have been finding many fish in a neutral feeding mood during the cold, rainy and windy weather. Warmer and more stable weather will have anglers switching to leeches, night crawlers and crankbaits. The best depth for Walleyes has varied all spring, but the larger 'eyes have come from deeper water.

Our largest four Walleyes caught in the past five weeks were landed by Eddie Houi (28 inches).....John Black, Jr. (28 inches)....Mike Hoffman (26 1/2 inches) and Eddie Houi again (25 1/2 inches). (See pictures in the 2009 Wall of Fame.)

Most Musky anglers have had a slow start to their season, but some anglers have hooked up with a Musky on a smaller bait. Shawn Hoffman found himself in a twenty minute battle with "about a 40-44 incher" on light tackle the other day...but the battle ended when the Musky returned Shawn's lure to the boat with straightened hooks. Several large and confident Muskies have been seen gently breaking the surface.

"Catch and Release" is a popular subject at Oak Haven Resort, especially before and during spawning periods. Our guests have been very selective. A vast majority of egg laying females were released alive....especially Crappies. (See pictures on 2009 Wall of Fame...guests mostly kept males and released females) Our Top Ten Crappies this spring are all 13 1/2 inches or longer. (Mouth closed, tail squeezed...I measured all ten myself.) Our largest Crappie so far in 2009 (14 1/8th inches) was landed by David Bigham. Dan Tabbert is our big Pike leader with a 32 3/4 incher.

June and July call for nicer weather and great fishing!

Oak Haven Resort is clean, quiet and very secluded. Boaters enjoy the sanctuary of our docks. Anglers crave the big fish potential for Musky, Pike, Walleye, Largemouth Bass, Crappies, Bluegills, Perch, Rock Bass and the explosive possibilities of the nine different lakes available to fish from our docks every day.
