I can't recall a spring quite like this one. Water temps after touching the low 60s briefly last week have tumbled back into the 50s. Fortunately these fluctuating water temps have not shut down the fishing. It has however caused location and bait preference to change almost on a daily basis. Early last week with cool temps we found active walleyes in 10 to 15 feet of water with minnows working best. Mid week on the same water with warmer temps a bit warmer, the fish moved up into 5 foot depths and were feeding aggressively on crawlers and leeches. The cooler weather the past couple of days has pushed them deeper again.

Crappies on the larger lakes have been having a tough time finding the right conditions to spawn. Quite a few that we caught last week still had spawn in them. Chances are that some may not spawn at all this Spring.

Some bass had been testing the shallows last week but have been pushed back out a little deeper again with the recent cold snap. The weather man, if you can believe him, is calling for mid 70s by the weekend. This should trigger a very good bite for both largemouth and smallmouth. Should also turn the bluegills on.

Weed growth is behind schedule on msot waters. We need some warm sunny weather to help things catch up.
