Just curious if the river is totally frozen anywhere?

I have not been South of Warren for a few weeks.......

A couple spots in the middle are open but mainly froze over. Only open water is the outflow and the creek below it.

I traveled to the beaver area the other night and saw that the Ohio, Beaver and lower Allegheny were pretty much iced over.

The Susquehanna was completely frozen over in the Harrisburg area this weekend. The Juniata was pretty much open and many feeder streams were open as well in the SC part of the state.

Kinzua is reducing the outlfow again today.......if it is not frozen yet, it will be soon. The riffles will be clear but most eddies will have some bank ice, at least.

The ACE are reducing the flow again this morning........nothing melting and no rain means the levels will be like this for sometime. I hope we get a mini-warm-up soon to raise the river and flush some ice out.

It would be nice to hit some open water sometime in March.

I gotta say you guys are lucky to even be talking about open water OR muskie fishing this time of year. we have 6 months till the muskie season opener.

speaking of, is it worth making the 3 hour trek to the resevior for muskies/pike walleye in march/april? heard conflicting reports on the general productivity of the res. but I gotta get into em before the end of june!!! without a jet I don't think the river is an option, right?

The river will require a jet for sure. As for driving to the Res for pre-spawn pike and musky, that is a tough one to answer. Big pike can be caught up there during early Spring (and through the ice as the state record was) but finding them is the tough part. Much of the Res is unproductive and if you are a newbie to that water, you will probably be unsatisfied with your trip down there.

the res. is absolutely my favorite place to fish.
i'd wait until at least april though, pending the ice of course.

focus on the backs of the bays during peak times.
troll the mouths of the bays the rest of the time.
there are monster fish in there.

The river ice should be flushed out. Local creeks are high including the large tributary of Chautauqua Lake which was frozen solid just 2 days ago. Big sheets of ice heading South to the Franklin/Oil City area.

The ice has made it to the Franklin/Oil City area along with a lot of water.
