January 3, 2010 Fishing Report

Hi folks. Here’s the first fishing report of 2010. Ice fishing’s in full swing up here in the northwoods and anglers are enjoying some pretty good fishing when it comes to walleyes. These fish have been putting on a fairly strong evening bite and are being located in weeds in water depths ranging from 8 to 12 feet. Tip ups with walleye suckers have been working the best on these fish and set your bait to hang just above the weeds or just above the bottom in the holes of the weeds. Timber, if available, is your next best bet and in the same water depth. NORTHERN PIKE have also been putting on a pretty good bite during the daytime hours. These fish are taking big golden shiners and look for them also in the heaviest of the weed cover you can find.

PANFISH action has been relatively slow, just some smaller perch being caught. Be careful when heading out. Ice conditions aren’t the greatest. We received heavy snow in December right as the ice was forming and this has lead to slushy conditions and weak ice in spots. I’ve received pictures of trailers and ATV’s that have dropped through. What you will find on most waters is a couple of inches of good ice, followed by 4 to 5 inches of hollow ice created by the slush and slow. So as always, when heading out, use caution and common sense.

Good luck fishing. Jeff
