We finally got some true hot summer weather in 2009 during the past week. Fishing action was good amongst most target species.

Walleye were hitting on the humps as well as shoreline points (15-25 feet). Also saw a few boats fishing more fall pattern areas (deep water with current) when I was on the water myself. There were several nice fish caught during the week, including 28 and 29 inchers. Minnows always outsell leeches about 10-1 at this time of the year.

Muskie action was steady again, with a couple of days of really hot bite. Many big fish were seen, with most showing up on rock structure for a more "normal" summer pattern. Still a few fish in the weeds so don't pass up every sandy bay or pocket you come across, you might find a nice fish there too. Big bucktails were the best producer, as they typically are on rock structure.

Northerns were hitting as well. Shallow weeds were the ticket there. Spoons and smaller spinner baits had the most action.

Dick Moore found some crappies up in Miles Bay in about 30 feet of water.

Late summer is a great time to be on the water up here. People are starting to get back into their routines at home for school, work, extra-curricular activities and other things so the number of boats on the lake is significantly lower. What better time to get up fishing than when everyone else is doing something else.

Check out the late summer and early fall action on LOTW someday soon. You won't regret it.

Good fishing everyone.
